The Ethical Metalsmiths Education Committee is pleased to announce the next International State of Practice event on Thursday September 14th, 2023!
International State of Practice is a webinar series created by Ethical Metalsmiths, addressing the urgency of sustainability in the field of Jewelry and Metalsmithing, focusing on issues uniquely relevant to students, educators, and new professionals globally.
This webinar session will engage current and future EDUCATORS in the field of Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Event Presenters Dr. Karen Westland, Curtis H. Arima and Elizabeth Shaw will share a critical look at forging a jewelry and metalsmithing curriculum centered on social and environmental justice. We will provide information and examples of ways these educators (globally) are changing their programs, studios, and curricula to address issues of social and environmental impact.
We look forward to working through the issues together, as we develop resources as a COLLECTIVE of global colleagues.

Dr. Karen Westland (she, her, hers)
Dr Karen Westland is the Ethical Making Programme Manager of The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust. Drawing from her experience as a silversmith and researcher for the role, Karen is responsible for all aspects of the Ethical Making Programme, including the Ethical Making Resource, annual symposium and Ethical Making Pledge with institutions across the UK.

Curtis H. Arima
Curtis H. Arima (he, him, his)
Curtis H. Arima is a metalsmith who is drawn to the transformative nature of materials and the memory, emotion, and history that objects can hold. He earned a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy. His jewelry and sculpture has been exhibited/published nationally and internationally. He has lectured and taught workshops in the US, Japan, and China. He is a member of the Ethical Metalsmiths Advisory Committee.
Curtis enjoys helping students find their artistic identity and connection to more sustainable practices as associate professor and Chair of the Jewelry & Metal Art Program at California College of the Arts. His publications include Metalsmith Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, Lapidary Journal, the Lark 500 Series books, and New Brooches.
Elizabeth Shaw (she, her, hers)
Dr Elizabeth Shaw is a Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Jewellery and Small Objects at Queensland College of Art Griffith University; her studio practice is informed by traditions of silversmithing and sculpture. Shaw contributes to academic research with a focus on ethical practice and the social and cultural values and meanings associated with objects. She exhibits regularly and is interested in the role of the maker within society, working to address societal and environmental needs.
