International State of Practice is a webinar series created by the Community for Ethical Jewelry, addressing the urgency of sustainability in the field of Jewelry and Metalsmithing.
International State of Practice 2023
This webinar session will engage current and future EDUCATORS in the field of Jewelry and Metalsmithing. We will provide information and examples of ways educators (globally) are changing their programs, studios, and curricula to address issues of social and environmental impact. We will provide ample time for group discussion, in an effort to collect information from our attendees about roadblocks they have met, questions they have, and successes they have discovered. This information will be used to direct future content for this webinar series.
We look forward to working through the issues together, as we develop resources as a COLLECTIVE of global colleagues.

Dr. Karen Westland

Dr Karen Westland is the Ethical Making Programme Manager of The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust. Drawing from their experience as a silversmith and researcher for the role, Karen is responsible for all aspects of the Ethical Making Programme, including the Ethical Making Resource, annual symposium and Ethical Making Pledge with institutions across the UK.
Curtis H. Arima
(he, him, his)
Curtis H. Arima is a metalsmith who is drawn to the transformative nature of materials and the memory, emotion, and history that objects can hold. He earned a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy. His jewelry and sculpture has been exhibited/published nationally and internationally. He has lectured and taught workshops in the US, Japan, and China. He is a member of the Ethical Metalsmiths Advisory Committee. He enjoys helping students find their artistic identity and connection to more sustainable practices as associate professor and Chair of the Jewelry & Metal Art Program at California College of the Arts. His publications include, Metalsmith Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, Lapidary Journal, the Lark 500 Series books, and New Brooches.
Elizabeth Shaw

Dr Elizabeth Shaw is a Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Jewellery and Small Objects at Queensland College of Art Griffith University; her studio practice is informed by traditions of silversmithing and sculpture. Shaw contributes to academic research with a focus on ethical practice and the social and cultural values and meanings associated with objects. She exhibits regularly and is interested in the role of the maker within society, working to address societal and environmental needs.
International State of Practice is powered by our Education Committee
The Education Committee builds a community that champions the most sustainable practices in the metalsmithing and jewelry fields. Through questioning and interrogating accepted standards, we foster curiosity to find best practices. We disseminate this information and build calls to action through projects such as Radical Jewelry Makeover, International State of Practice, So Fresh + So Clean, and Criticalsmiths.
