How CRAFT & the new ASM Progress app can help jewelers support artisanal miners

In 2016, the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) together with RESOLVE, created the Code of Risk-mitigation for ASM engaging in Formal Trade, otherwise known as CRAFT. This open source code offers a stepping stone for artisanal miners, making due diligence responsibilities a bit easier by satisfying legislative requirements and signaling a mining organization’s willingness to formalize. CRAFT allows for progress and improvement over perfection and can increase options for jewelers who want to source material from artisanal miners.

Artisanal and small-scale miners do not usually have the technical expertise, resources or institutional backing needed to increase their odds of selling to formal markets. This challenge is compounded by expectations of international purchasers required to comply with legislation and frameworks such as OECD Due Diligence Guidance (OECD DDG), the US Dodd-Frank Act, and the European Union (EU) Conflict Minerals Regulation.
